The most loved of all villains is back with an even more powerful, dangerous and dashing avatar. Gabbar Singh of Sholay fame has either gone back in time to present times or is still alive. Except this time he can be seen wearing a suit and tie on some occasions, on the other he wears the same scant clothes that had made him an object of lust for many during his first outing. This is not your grandfather's Gabbar Singh; he has been recreated as a swanky goon who knows how to make his way in business, by fair means or foul... The real story begins with a hospitalised Yashvardhan Azad (Amitabh Bachchan) being questioned by the CBI about the jewel theft that happened in his house while he was there attending to his wife Sandhya (Sonakshi Sinha). Yashvardhan, an ex-army officer, is troubled by dreams of this robbery happening again. This case is entrusted into the hands of ACP Shrivastav (Rishi Kapoor), who makes it his personal vendetta to get at the bottom of this mystery. His investigations lead him to exhume the long buried secrets involving Gabbar Singh's crimes. This finds him crossing paths with Zoya Rehman (Kangana Ranaut) who was also a part of Gabbar's gang. How the two-sided Gabbar plays out his hand, whether Shrivastav finally gets his man or not is all that makes for this whodunit. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the movie takes inspiration from Yash Chopra's 1978 film "Trishul" where the villain was shown to be behind every evil happening in the city. Here, however, Gabbar is not shown as an alien force but as someone who has ingratiated himself into respectable society with a string of legitimate businesses. The movie has featured some of the main faces of Bollywood like Amitabh Bachchan, Sonakshi Sinha, Rishi Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Sanjay Dutt with western stars like Vincent Cassel and Vinnie Jones. The music is composed by Vishal-Shekhar. The film was released on 20 December 2014
Amitabh Bachchan received praise for his performance in the film. Neeraj Pandey praised Bachchan for his acting skills in the movie. The film received a few negative reviews from the critics. Raja Sen of Rediff.com gave the film a rating of 2.5 stars out of 5, and said that "Shoot in a deserted Paris in 2036 for a plot that’s actually about perfect casting isn’t going to fool anyone." Rajeev Masand gave the movie 2 stars out of 5 and stated "It's not entirely clear what "Gabbar Is Back" is supposed to be about, but it never gets too far off its course." The film grossed 85 crore worldwide on its opening day, and went up to get 185 crore nett in India without any overseas release.
